The Flåm Railway
Flåm is world-famous for the Flåm Railway, one of the world’s steepest railway lines on normal gauge. It is an incredible train journey from the mountain station at Myrdal down to Flåm. You travel 20 km through 20 tunnels, in a great and wild nature. They started with the construction of the railway in 1923 and it took 20 years to finish it. 18 of the 20 tunnels were excavated manually by the workers called “Rallar”, and every new meter took them one month of hard work to finish. You can find more about the story under the Flåm Railway Documentation Centre.

Experience
The Name Flåm means „small flat between steep mountains“. At the end of the 18th century several cruise ships with English and German guests came here to experience the Norwegian fjords, mountains and waterfalls. In this way visitors by ship were also the basis for hotel business. After the opening of the “Bergensbanen” in 1909, Flåm became an intersection for all passengers, mail and goods from the trains between Oslo and Bergen. The 80 km long temporary road for construction from Haugestøl and Finse to Flåm has become a landmark itself, with thousands of cyclists every year.

Good communications make Flåm to an intersection which is easy available, whether you arrive by ship, train or bus. In our direct neighbourhood you’ll find for example Aurland with the manufacturing and sale of the famous Aurlandshoes, the Aurland valley, a popular walking tour, the Nærøyfjord which is on the UNSECO World Heritage List, the Aurland road, a 48 km long mountain road between Aurland and Lærdal, Otternes Farm museum with 27 different buildings from the 16th century and a beautiful view towards Flåm and the quiet Aurland fjord, the Lærdal tunnel who is the longest road tunnel in the world with 24, 5 km, Gudvangen and the Vikings, Stalheim with a wonderful sight and Undredal with a stave church from 1147, which is the smallest stave church in Scandinavia with only 40 seats.
